Any disease that holds the respiratory system can impair lung function, causing complaints such as wheezing, snoring, coughing, phlegm, coughing blood coming from the mouth, chest and side pain, back and shoulder pain, weight loss, weakness, loss of appetite, night sweats and fever. In the department, examinations, treatments and follow-ups related to lung diseases are carried out and many opportunities provided by medical technology are also used for this purpose.
There is an advanced respiratory physiology laboratory in the Department of Chest Diseases. In the Respiratory Physiology Laboratory, spirometric tests, reversibilite test, current volume curve, diffusion capacity, lung volumes, exercise test and maximum oxygen consumption, bronchial provocation test, arterial blood gas measurements can be performed. Allergy skin test is widely applied.
In our bronchoscopy unit, endoscopic examination of the respiratory tract can be performed with rigid bronchoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy (with video bronchoscopy) devices that allow early and definitive diagnosis of lung diseases, especially lung cancer.
Sleep breathing disorders can lead to cardiovascular (hypertension, arrhythmia, heart failure, sudden death) and cerebrovascular (stroke). Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is also the most common (95%) of this range of diseases. Snoring, sleep breathing, daytime insomnia, morning headache, attention disorder, signs of waking up tired from sleep are the most common symptoms. Many sleep disorders, especially snoring, are diagnosed and treated in the sleep laboratory.
Smoking is one of the most preventable causes that threaten public health. With its direct effects on the lung, it causes both airway diseases (chronic obstructive lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema) and lung cancer, which is the leading cause of death from cancer. In addition, exposure to cigarette smoke, especially in children, can cause both lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis) and asthma. The more effective way to treat diseases is to prevent the formation of diseases, i.e. preventive medicine.
