General Surgery
General surgery is a technical discipline that not only addresses systemic and localized problems in the body through surgical methods but also covers fundamental principles such as wound healing, metabolic and endocrine responses to trauma. It has influenced the development of many surgical and basic medical fields.
Surgical procedures are usually named after the organ or system involved. General surgery includes procedures for the thyroid (goiter), breast, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, hernias, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, as well as endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeries. When categorized by system, it covers thyroid surgeries, breast surgeries, esophageal, gastric, duodenal, small intestine, large intestine, rectal, liver, and hernia surgeries. In some cases, general surgery also emphasizes preventive medicine to avoid the need for surgery.
Due to its wide range of interests, the General Surgery Department works in collaboration with many other disciplines. A large portion of general surgery patients are cancer cases. For these patients, diagnosis, surgery, and follow-up treatment planning are carried out in cooperation with Gastroenterology, Radiology/Interventional Radiology, Pathology, Medical and Radiation Oncology.
Another important area of general surgery is trauma care. Trauma patients often present with multiple organ injuries, requiring coordinated care with Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Urology, and Cardiovascular Surgery departments. In cases of severe multi-organ trauma, General Surgery takes the lead in coordinating all related specialties.
At our hospitals’ General Surgery Departments, screening and follow-up programs for early detection of colorectal and breast cancers are also conducted, reflecting our social responsibility towards public health.
